Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?
No. You do not need to be flexible to do yoga, and that is the biggest myth keeping people from starting. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a prerequisite for it. If you cannot reach your toes, feel stiff, or think you are "as stiff as a board", yoga is exactly for you. Every pose has more accessible versions, and in a live class the teacher adjusts the practice to where your body is today.
Why this myth exists
The yoga photos all over the internet almost always show bodies in advanced poses. That gives the wrong idea that you have to arrive flexible.
In real practice, nobody starts like that. Flexibility, strength and balance are consequences of practicing consistently, not the way in.
How to start even when stiff
Use props: blocks, cushions, a wall and a chair bring any pose within your reach.
Respect your limit for the day. Yoga is not a competition or forced stretching, it is attention to the body.
In a beginner class, say it is your first time. The teacher offers the simplest version of each movement.

I am very stiff, can I still do yoga?
Yes. People with little flexibility are exactly the ones who gain the most, because the body has a lot to release. You start where you are and improve over time.
How long until I become more flexible?
It varies from body to body, but with 3 to 4 sessions a week many people feel a difference within a few weeks. Consistency matters more than intensity.
Do I need to touch my toes to start?
No. Bending your knees, using a block or stopping halfway is perfectly valid. The pose adapts to you, not the other way around.
