Myths and beliefs

Is yoga just stretching?

No, and this is one of the most mistaken ideas about the practice. Stretching is part of it, but yoga is much more: it works on strength (holding your own weight in poses takes muscle), balance, mobility, breathing and mindfulness. It is a complete practice that involves body and mind at the same time. Reducing yoga to "stretching the body" misses exactly what it has most valuable.

What yoga works on beyond stretching

Strength: many poses hold your body weight and genuinely strengthen you.

Balance and coordination, which improve body awareness.

Breathing and focus, which calm the mind and bring you into the present.

Do I need to already be flexible to start?

No. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a prerequisite. You start where you are today.
