What is the difference between yoga and pilates?
Yoga and pilates look alike because they are low-impact practices done on a mat, but they have different origins and goals. Yoga is the older practice, combining movement, breathing and mindfulness, with a strong relaxation and mental well-being side. Pilates is more recent and was born focused on strengthening, movement control and core stability. You can do both, but if what you are looking for is breathing, awareness and calm, yoga is the way.
In short
Yoga: breathing, mobility, balance and mindfulness, with a strong mental side.
Pilates: control, posture and core strengthening, with a strong physical side.
Both are low-impact and can complement each other.

Which is better for a beginner?
It depends on your goal. If you want breathing, relaxation and body awareness, yoga fits more. If you want a focus on strengthening and posture, pilates. Both have beginner classes.
Is yoga lighter than pilates?
Not always. There are quite vigorous yoga practices and very gentle pilates practices. Intensity depends on the style and the class, not just the name.
