Therapeutic yoga

Does yoga help you sleep better and with insomnia?

It can help. Gentle yoga and breathing done at night help slow the body and mind down, creating a calmer transition into sleep. Yoga is a mind-body practice associated with reducing stress, and stress is one of the great enemies of a good night. It is not a cure for sleep disorders, but it is a habit that can prepare you to sleep better.

Important: yoga is a complement, not a treatment

Yoga can support your well-being, but it does not replace medical or physiotherapy care. If you have a diagnosed condition, persistent pain, are pregnant, or are recovering from an injury or surgery, talk to a health professional before you start.

In a live class the teacher can see you and suggest adaptations for your body and your day. It is the safest way to practice when there is any physical complaint.

How the practice prepares for sleep

Restorative poses and light stretches release the tension built up during the day.

Slow breathing signals to the body that it is time to wind down.

Creating a ritual at night helps the brain associate that moment with rest.

Frequently asked questions

What time is best to practice to sleep well?

A gentle practice at the end of the day or near bedtime usually works best. Intense classes very late can have the opposite effect and leave you more active.

Does yoga cure insomnia?

Do not treat yoga as a cure. It is a support. If insomnia is frequent and disrupts your day, see a health professional to investigate the cause.
